Manufacturing Industrial Parts Using Laser Technology
Laser technology can be used for cutting, boring and marking wide range of materials. The accuracy of this technology is high compared to other traditional methods. Hence, due to high accuracy, excellent cut quality, very small notch width and small heat affect zone and possibility of cutting intricate shapes and small holes, it is used in industrial manufacturing applications and also commercials purposes.
For instance, laser cutter works by directing the laser beam through optics and controlled by a control system that follows the G-code of the pattern to be cut onto the material. Laser beam is focused and directed at the material and leads to melting and vaporization of the target, also a jet of gas helps removal of the material that leads to leave an edge with a high-quality surface finish.
Moreover, laser beam is applicable in additive manufacturing processes. In this method, laser beam is used to melt powder (partially or completely) to bind the material together to create a solid structure. One of the most advanced methods of 3D printing is direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), also called selective laser sintering (SLS).
SLS is a one-step fabrication process involving a laser to selectively sinter powder particles in a layered manner to form 3D structures. The SLS printer consists of a powder bed, a powder reservoir, a roller and a laser source. The powder homogenously spread on the powder bed by the roller. Depending on the 3D design of the object, the laser is focused to draw specific patterns on the powder surface sintering and agglomerating the powder particles. Once the first layer is sintered, the powder bed moves down while the reservoir bed moves up to allow for the delivery of a new layer of powder on top of the previous one [1].
The unique characteristics of AM process are as follows [2]:
- Fabrication of products with complex designs.
- Wide variety of products with desired capability.
- Reduces direct and indirect costs effectively.
- Capability for defining and controlling process parameters such as scan speed, layer thickness and laser energy resulting in time efficiency.
- Create light-weight components
